From December 2009 until March 2010, this Jewish boy from Montreal will be reconnecting with his Asian roots.

Journey with me through the scenic beaches of Thailand, the historic temples of Cambodia and Indonesia, the family reunion in the Philippines and the traveler's diarrhea of EVERYWHERE. Maybe you'll find out Asia is calling you too.

Randy Locator:

I left my heart in - Manila, Montreal and beneath the belly of a baby whale shark.

This was the best trip of my life for so many reasons. I learned about the people and cultures of eight fantastic countries - their histories, languages, food and current problems have all contributed to a greater understanding of the world we live in and to a strong appreciation for Southeast Asian values. I discovered diving, which quickly became the greatest activity I’ve ever done and resulted in a profound love for the sea and all of it’s magnificent creatures. I know that this pastime will forever be a part of my life. I grew even closer to a wonderful Austrian friend who I already considered close. Having close friends you trust half a world away is so great because it shrinks the world we live in, and can easily make a foreign land suddenly feel like home. I reconnected with both my roots and with relatives in the Philippines, and was reminded about the importance of family and how strong familial bonds can be, even when separated by oceans and time zones. Visits to the motherland will surely be a part of my future, and I eagerly await the next one. I found someone who is the most amazing person I’ve ever met, and the craziest part is she was in Montreal the whole time. Life is so good.

Thanks to everyone that followed this blog - your feedback motivated me to keep blogging.

On the boat from Bali to Gili Trawangan. Fish look nicer when they’re alive and under the sea or fried and on a plate with a side salad. Hanging upside down dripping blood is not a good look for fish.

No cars at all on Gili T, just horse-drawn carriages that motor down the island’s lone road at ridiculous speeds that would be made acceptable if horses honked, but they don’t.

The cats rule on Gili Trawangan. The cat population actually exceeds the human one, and it’s impossible to eat anywhere without at least one cat under the table and two by your feet.

I took this cat on a date and bought her spaghetti, and then she didn’t even touch it. And after dinner she wouldn’t let me pet her. Worst date ever.
